Biological sence of separation Firmicutes on Firmicutes_ABCD

Hi

I noticed that in comparison of SIlva DB in GTDB there is occurence of additional separation of taxons

For example instead of “Hungatella” there are both “Hungatella” and “Hungatella_A” genera.

The most interesting case is separation Firmicutes on “Firmicutes_A”, “Firmicutes_B”, “Firmicutes_C” and “Firmicutes_D” phylums

Is there are some biological meaning of such separation? Or this is special artificial division for some technical purposes?

Hi,

Information about alphabetic suffixes in GTDB can be found in the following two FAQ entries:

https://gtdb.ecogenomic.org/faq#why-do-some-genus-and-species-names-end-with-an-alphabetic-suffix

https://gtdb.ecogenomic.org/faq#why-do-some-family-and-higher-rank-names-end-with-an-alphabetic-suffix

Cheers,
